December at Shropshire Community Project

December at Shropshire Community Project has been a busy month that has seen us settle into the new Telford Community Store (we’re in the old Iceland building at the back of Debenhams in Telford Town Centre) and welcome in customers both old and new.

As always, we are incredibly grateful for public support and will always welcome donations of used furniture, clothing and bric-a-brac. Public donations mean the world to us as we can sell these items in store with all profits circulating back in to the community to help charities and people in crisis across Shropshire.

But life at Shropshire Community Project is not all about selling sofas and clothes from our shop, although this is an important part of what we do, we also continually focus on new and innovative projects that will help us to support more of the people that need it most.

Throughout December we’ve been busy preparing for the exciting projects that we’re kickstarting in 2018. Some of these are still very much under wraps and a work in progress, but others we are now very happy to share with you!

During December, we have:

  • Set up a pop-up social supermarket in the Telford store with every day essentials (and some treats thrown in for good measure) kindly donated from businesses in our community. The social supermarket is a place where surplus food is available to everyone. A place where you can save money on buying those every day items and where you won’t be judged. Our aim is to help people to help themselves before they ever need to use a food bank.
  • Continued to make plans for the roll out of our Community People programme; an employability platform that covers every aspect of the job search process – from crucial essentials through to getting promoted, navigating challenges at work, and developing a toolset for future success in the job market. We have some incredibly exciting partnerships to announce in the coming weeks that will see this platform support thousands of people across many communities in the UK. Watch this space!
  • Launched our all new social fashion store, Community Fashion. With generous donations of clothing and accessories from the public, Community Fashion is an online store that sells second hand clothing of excellent quality, preventing it from going to landfill and providing a sustainable outlet where people can purchase affordable, branded items at the lowest prices. As with all of our initiatives, surplus profits from this project will go towards helping those in our community.
  • Collected items from the generous teams and their supporters at NC United FC. These amazing folks have provided football boots and kit that will be given to our contacts who run local children’s sports charities and projects. This essential kit will help kids discover wellbeing through sporting activities. Other clothing that has been donated by NC United FC has already been recycled with lots of excellent items having already sold via our Community Fashion project.

As always, we have also continued to support our charity partners, including YMCA with the donation of a washing machine and Christmas goodies for the amazing staff that support our young people, and Maninplace with the provision of furniture and essentials for their homeless customers.

From all of us at Shropshire Community Project, we wish you all a very happy and healthy New Year and look forward to your continued support in 2018.
